Gail Hawes studied textiles in London under
tutor Julia Caprara, a founding member of the 62 Group. Unable to start her creative practice at
this time, she went on to have a career in marketing. She also ran a non-profit in South Africa
with her husband for 8 years. During
these years, she continued her interested in textiles by studying and
collecting antique textiles. She has an
extensive collection, and regularly does talks. Travelling extensively gave her the opportunity to study tribal groups
in various parts of the world. Only
since returning to Australia has she begun to more fully explore experimental
textiles which she first studied.
ROUND was the first solo exhibition for textile Artist Gail Hawes held at
City Arts Space, Northbridge Piazza, from 23rd February 2019.
This exhibition was a departure from the
stitched textiles which Gail Hawes has most recently been known. Over many years she has built up a broad
knowledge of a wide variety of textile techniques which she now integrates into
her work.
